Where there is a spiritual vacuum, the occult becomes popular  (1 Samuel 28:7) Then said Saul to his servants, seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at Endor. En-dor; rAD* !y[eî a place in the tribe of Manasseh, within Jordan, not very far from the place where the Philistine armies were encamped. Endor means "the spring of the round," or “the fountain of the dwelling” i.e. perhaps of the dwelling, houses being originally circular in shape around the fountain. To arrive at Endor he had to pass the hostile Philistine camp, and would probably creep round the eastern shoulder of the hill (WBC).  The distance from the camp of Israel on Gilboa to En-dor was about ten miles further, owing perhaps to the circuit they would have to make round the camp of the Philistines (Ellicott). As the journey was very dangerous, Saul disguised himself, and went by night, accompanied only by two men.   A woman that hath a familiar spirit; one that converses with the devil, and dead men’s ghosts, and by them can discover future things (Isa 8:19; Matthew Poole). Such a woman literally called, “possessor of an Ob bAa, prophesying spirit of the dead.” Such practice to consult with the spirits of the dead is called necromancy, or spiritism. “Saul was desperate. Where there is a spiritual vacuum, the occult becomes popular.   But it is a violation of the First Commandment and is clearly forbidden in the Old Testament. “When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists … Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” (Isa 8:19; WBC). The divination was strictly forbidden (Deut 18:10, 11, 14), yet the diviner was in high popular estimation (Isa 3:2). It had been an enduring superstition in Israel. Saul became the victim of this folly after his reason was disturbed, and as a punishment for heinous sins (Pulpit). 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11 says, “the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. And for this reason, God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they might believe what is false.”
